The substance promises to create a "better" version of the user—younger, more beautiful, and more perfect.
However, there are several things you should know before clicking those links:
Intrigued by the promise of a second chance, Elisabeth follows the cryptic instructions. She visits a secluded warehouse, picks up the serum, and injects herself at home. What follows is one of the most grotesque and memorable sequences in modern horror: her back splits open, and from the gore emerges a younger, stunningly perfect version of herself (played by Margaret Qualley). This new self is named Sue (which is an abbreviation of SUBSTANCE and an anagram of Elisabeth's last name, Sparkle).
There is, however, a strict set of rules. The two consciousnesses—Elisabeth and Sue—must switch bodies every seven days. When one is "awake," the other lies unconscious and rapidly aging. The "Mother" (Elisabeth) must provide a "Stabilizer" fluid for the "Other Self" (Sue) to function. This delicate equilibrium is impossible to maintain for the narcissistic Sue.
