When transphobic "bathroom bills" swept the US in 2016, the cisgender LGBTQ community was slow to respond. Many gay men and lesbians initially viewed it as a "trans issue," not a queer one. Only when activists framed it as an extension of anti-LGBTQ surveillance did the broader culture mobilize. This delay revealed an uncomfortable truth: many cisgender queer people enjoy passing privilege that trans people do not.
